The big three

It all runs on one of three networks

Telstra, Optus and Vodafone build and run the actual towers. Almost every other name on this page, including Boost, ALDImobile and Amaysim, is an MVNO: a brand that buys network access wholesale and resells it, usually for a lot less than the network owner charges directly. Here's the rough coverage picture for the three that own the infrastructure.

Telstra

The widest reach by far, and the network to beat for regional and rural Australia.

Population coverage99.7%

Optus

Strong, fast coverage across cities and most large towns at sharper prices.

Population coverage (3G/4G, dated)98.5%

Vodafone

Cheapest of the three in the cities, and a much bigger regional map since 2025.

Population coverage99%

All three come from the carrier's own site, and the network hubs below link the exact page. Optus's is the one to hold loosely: the only page it states a figure on describes the 98.5% as 3G and 4G coverage, and Optus turned its 3G network off in 2024.

Shop by network

Pick your network, then compare every brand on it

Once you know which network actually covers where you live, work and travel, the fastest way to shop is to ignore every other logo and compare only the brands riding that network.
